Glossary term
A hypothetical point at which technological growth, driven by AI, becomes uncontrollable and irreversible.
The technological singularity is a hypothetical point at which AI becomes able to improve itself so quickly that progress becomes explosive and impossible to predict. The idea was popularized by writers such as Vernor Vinge and Ray Kurzweil.
It is a speculative concept: there is no consensus on whether, when or how such a process would happen.
It frames debates about long-term AI futures, and it is often cited, and also contested.
