A family of methods that improve solutions through processes inspired by biological evolution.
Evolutionary computation is the family of optimization methods inspired by biological evolution: populations, variation, selection and inheritance. Genetic algorithms are one member; others include evolution strategies and genetic programming. They need little knowledge of the problem's structure.
They can find unexpected designs and are used when gradients are not available.
