Finding relevant information from a collection of documents or data.
Retrieval is finding the pieces of information relevant to a query from a large collection. Methods include keyword matching, such as BM25, and semantic search over embeddings, often combined.
Good retrieval is half of a good RAG system: the model cannot use a passage it was never shown.
The quality of what is retrieved sets a ceiling on the quality of the answer.
