A model's ability to call external tools, such as search or code execution, to complete a task.
Tool use lets a model go beyond text: search the web, run code, query a database or read files. The model decides when a tool would help, requests it, and uses the output in its answer. It is the foundation of AI agents.
Tools compensate for a model's weaknesses, such as outdated knowledge and arithmetic, and let it complete real tasks.
