Glossary term
A feature in which a model returns a structured request to call a function or tool.
With function calling, you describe available functions to the model, with names and parameters. When it needs one, it replies with a structured request, such as get_weather with city Paris, instead of prose. Your code runs the function and returns the result. The model never runs the code itself.
