Glossary term
A term for the most capable general-purpose AI models available at a given time.
'Frontier' describes the most capable general-purpose models at a given time. There is no fixed definition; the label moves forward as capabilities improve.
Policy discussions often use it, or a compute threshold, to decide which models face extra safety testing or reporting.
Rules on safety evaluations and transparency are often aimed specifically at frontier models.
