Dividing an image into regions, labelling which pixels belong to which object.
Segmentation labels the image at the pixel level, outlining exactly which pixels belong to a person, a road or a tumor. Semantic segmentation labels classes, and instance segmentation separates individual objects. It gives much finer detail than a bounding box.
It is crucial in medical imaging, self-driving cars and photo editing.
