AI watermarking embeds a hidden signal in generated content so it can be detected later. For images it may be a subtle pattern in pixels; for text, a statistical bias in word choices.
Watermarks can be weakened by editing, and only work if the generator adds them.
It is one tool for labelling AI-generated content, alongside provenance metadata.
